What is the Enhanced Public Outreach Plan?|
The Bike Coalition and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority received a Community Based Transportation Planning Grant from Caltrans to increase the level of public input for the upcoming countywide Bicycle Transportation Master Plan (BTMP). The final product will be an Enhanced Public Outreach Plan. Work began in August, 2003, and the final report will be available after September, 2004. The grant will significantly increase the ability of traditionally disenfranchised communities to influence bicycle policy and infrastructure development. Public input will be gathered through bicyclist surveys and public outreach at over 50 events around the county. The survey, in English or Spanish, was made available by mail, on-line, and at outreach events in communities targeted based on income levels, transit use and bicycle use. The complete report is now available.

Our outreach strategy has been to identify community events and gathering places where we can speak directly with local bicyclists and others about how best to improve the bicycling environment in their communities. This approach has allowed us to learn from significant numbers of everyday bicyclists who would be unlikely to attend traditional public meetings or workshops.
